Review

“’Well, I am a superhero…’ I tell her with all of my seven-year-old authority. ‘Okay,’ she says, ‘I’m going to be a dancer like my mom. You can be my very own superhero, and I will be your ballerina,’ she murmurs before falling asleep.”

                                                                                                       ~ Luke and Phoebe

Brisé is a book that had me hooked from the prologue. I had tears coming down my face when I read the above quote. It encompassed the naievte and innocence of a 7 year old boy and a 4 year old girl. I bond was formed right away and although that bond was stretched and tested time and time again it never truly broke. It was always there in some form, battered and worn but never fully destroyed.

Life is tough and some people learn that early on while others it may take longer. When you are faced with certain things at a young age you tend to mature faster but yet there are areas in life where you never really matured the way you should have. This is what Phoebe faces. Life has thrown her one twist and turn after another and with the support of those who love her she manages to come out the other side stronger than before. While reading this after going through some of what Phoebe had I forgot what her actual age was until she made a decision that truly showed her age and the sheltered life she had lived until that point. While my heart broke for everyone I believe that Phoebe needed to do what she did to find herself. She needed to experience life on her own without her “crutch”. Did it make reading what she went through any easier…no. Did it make me yell an less at her…no. Did it stop my tears from falling when she voiced her decision…no. Life isn’t always easy and there are choices that not everyone will agree with but it is still her life and she had to do what she felt was best for her at the time. There was a point when I was thinking enough is enough and that she needed to get over herself and go after what her heart truly needed.

Luke…what can I say about Luke except that he was amazing. Don’t get me wrong he screwed up quite a bit with Phoebe, but he was being a typical teenage, hormone driven boy. In his mind, he was doing what was best for Phoebe by pushing her away at that time in their lives. I honestly think it wasn’t the right thing at all and agreed with Phoebe’s mom. If he loved her so much then what he was doing was only hurting her and he should have seen that. Luke had his own share of heartache along the way. He broke my heart a couple of times and I really wished I could just hug him and tell him it would all be okay.

This book had me feeling so many things. It was full of some of life’s truths. There are quotes that I highlighted that ring true in my own life. I love when I can walk away from a book and not only enjoy the ride it took me on but also take something greater from it.

“Love isn’t always pretty, and life is messy. Sometimes it’s a fun messy and other times it is just plain messy.”

                                                                                     ~ Phoebe
