Synopsis

There is no greater burden than a secret, and Kari Stanley has been carrying one alone for a long time. Temptation was never so sweet.

Max Quinn has secrets of his own. His good deeds aren't just a product of his southern upbringing; they're his atonement. As one dinner turns into two, he realizes that Kari just might be his salvation.

As they struggle to find their path together, their secrets weigh heavier on them. Will they be able to trust one another with the truth, or will their secrets keep them apart forever?

Review

“I learned at a young age that when you feel like sinkin’, the best thing to do is to swim as hard as you can. Just going along with the undertow will get you one thing – sunk.”

                                                                                                                               ~ Max

Wow! I LOVED Cane and Jada and The Exception that I was actually nervous about reading Max and Kari’s story. I should not have been nervous at all because this book exceeded any and all my expectations. I felt some many different emotions while reading this. There were times that I had to put the book down and walk away for a few minutes to get my head around my emotions because they were everywhere. I would be completely happy and excited at what was happening with Max and Kari and then something would happen and I would be like “WTF” just happened. (This is all in a good way, I assure you!!) There were a few times that my eyes got watery because I could feel and understand the pain and emotions Kari was struggling with.

If you read The Exception (if you haven’t I recommend it because Cane and Jada are awesome), then you met Kari but we didn’t really get to know her too well. She was there and trying to be the best sister Jada could need but we never really saw her depth. That all changes with The Perception. We get into Kari’s head and it is there that I got frustrated. She was so scared throughout part o the book that it was causing her to push Mac away (well at least as much as Max would let her push him away, but we will get to him soon). Once the reason for Kari’s thoughts and action comes to light everything makes sense completely. I did have a hard time with Kari sometimes because I wanted to yell at her and tell her to put her big girl panties on, stop being scared and move forward but when I found out why she was so scared my heart broke for her. For Kari to go through what she did I can understand why she was so scared and why she kept feeling like she needed to keep Max at as distance. I know firsthand a little of what she experienced and I know how hard it was for me and how scared I was for a time after.

Now, let’s get to Max! Max is going to make your heart and pulse race, he will make you swoon, and he will make you want to find a Max of your own. He is everything a true gentleman should be, but don’t let that fool you…he is still an Alpha…just a different kind. He refuses to let Kari push him away. He knows what he wants and he is willing to wait Kari out and let her get here head straight. Max has some secrets and guilt of his own that he needs to work through and Kari helps him with that. It isn’t a one way street with how they help heal each other.

“Sweetheart, you and me- we’re permanent. You’ll see one of these days. I’m just waitin’ on you to come around.”

                                                                                                       ~ Max

This book was a great read. So great in fact that I could not go to sleep until I finished it. I read the book all in one day. I was sneaking chapters while at work and trying to cook dinner while reading because even though I had to put it down and walk away a few times, I went right back to it because I needed to see how it would all work out. I love that we still get Cane and Jada and got to keep up with them. We met a few new characters also, some you will love and some you will hate and want to punch in the face (or at least that’s how I felt.) The author showed so much growth in her writing in this book and it makes me so excited for whatever she decides to write next.
